Language Stream: English and Mandarin

Purpose: The qualification reflects the skills and knowledge required by interpreters for work typically in the community and business domains, interpreting content that is broad and routine or that may be readily predicted and planned for. The qualification is designed for people who are required to interpret in general dialogue settings, with the potential to interpret in general monologue settings where the interpreter is able to physically control the discourse to assist retention and recall
Delivery Method: Classroom based
Course Duration: 24 weeks (including 20 scheduled tuition weeks and 4 weeks of holidays)

Weekly Contact hours: 20 hours

Pathways: After achieving this qualification, candidates may undertake the Advanced Diploma of Translating or the Advanced Diploma of Interpreting. Articulation into programs in higher education may be possible from this Diploma. Certain employment conditions, assignments and work roles may require practising translators and interpreters to have NAATI certification.
Pre-requisites: There are no pre-requisites for this qualification or any of the units of competency contained within it.
Entry Requirements:
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age on commencement of the course
  • Students must be able to demonstrate they have completed Year 12 (Secondary School) or equivalent
  • Applicants must also demonstrate their language proficiency:
    • English Proficiency:
      • Students must demonstrate proficiency in English with a valid IELTS score of 6.0 or equivalent,or a recognized Degree or Diploma or equivalent studied in English.
    • Mandarin Proficiency:
      • Students must be able to demonstrate they have basic proficiency in Mandarin (conversational level) and achieve satisfactory results in the intake interpreting test.
  • Students must complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) assessment conducted by an ANAE
